Real Estate Education is for You

ApartmentReal estate is neither a profession nor a trade. No credentials are pre-requisite before venturing into real estate. Indeed many of us take it as a second profession, where we invest our hard earned monies, or where we commit our incomes from our primary profession. However, how many of us ever spend time to learn how real estate works?

I don’t mean you should seek a second degree or diploma in real estate. I would also find it hard to tell you what you should learn, but what I can say is, learn from your environment and the people you interact with. Keep consultants within your networks and you will be surprised at how freely they will share information with you. I have a client who consults me every month, though I know he bought his house some time back, and another discusses with me anything that comes to his mind on real estate. Consultants are usually generous with information, the more they share the more they learn.

By our actions, we shape real estate landscape, positively or negatively. You therefore need to make a resolution today and not tomorrow to learn more about real estate. I usually meet clients who are well informed on real estate matters. They have carried out their research pretty well and when they come to me, I do not pretend to know more than they do, but I help them in their quest to achieve their objectives. At all times, you remain the decision-maker, the CEO of your real estate. A consultant can only help you ask the right questions in making decisions. What you must also know is that you are not the only one, and decisions made by all players in aggregate affect you. For instance, if many people are interested in your location, values in that location will go up and vice versa, hence what you envision may not necessarily come to pass. So who needs real estate education? You do. Read widely; magazines, newspapers, books, and the internet. Confer with consultants and more importantly drive around and discover neighbourhoods. The rewards are amazing!

  3. 😀 As always Stephene, your comments are instructive.
May I add that attending open forums and trade fairs, where people of diverse back grounds and professions meet, has proven to be very enlightening for me both as a developer and as a seller of real estate.
    Keep up this good blog!
